My work is deeply personal and intimate while exploring the concept
of time and space and highlighting transformations of timbre, texture and varying levels of resonance; spectral harmonies;
ornamentation; and micro- and macro-gestures on the surface and within the structure of the music. As one of the most prolific and active composers of her generation, Kirsten Broberg
writes music for solo to large ensemble acoustic instruments and voices, electronic music, music for multimedia collaborations
and music for film. The surface details of my music range from silence to the fragility of barely audible, whispering,
pure, resonant and complex timbres; smooth and sustained to fluctuating, active or rough textures; trilled, tremolando and
grace note ornamentation types; glissandi, intertwining, angular, cascading and sustained gestures; and extended, hocketed,
dovetailed, hyper-instrumental and conglomerate orchestrational techniques. I do not conceptualize these materials as mere decoration in my work; but rather as states
through which sound evolves on both local and global levels. Further, the treatment of these components--the modulation each
aspect undergoes--is paramount to the resulting form, sequence and proportional duration of musical events.
As a result, form is generated through process: domains
organically evolve spawned by the intersection of two or more permutations simultaneously occurring. It is through this
that I create a strong sense of expression and dramatic intensity. --Kirsten Broberg on September 12, 2008
